Florence Marian McNeill was born in Holm, Orkney in 1885. A daughter of the manse, she spent her childhood in the islands. She studied at Glasgow University. In 1929 she published The Scots Kitchen. Between 1957 and 1968 she wrote The Silver Bough in four volumes. F. Marian McNeill died in 1973.
