20 DEC 02Inverness CourierScottish Place-Name Papers
The newly-published collection of William J Watson's Scottish Place-Name Papers was reviewed (in Gaelic) in the Inverness Courier.
'... bidh sibh eòlach air toradh a chuid sgoilearachd anns an dà leabhar -- Place Names of Ross and Cromarty (1904) agus The History of the Celtic Place-names of Scotland (1926). Ma tha sibh measail orra sin, mar a tha mise, cuiridh sibh fàilte mhòr air leabhar a th' air ùr-nochdadh ... Tha rudan fìor phrìseil anns an leabhar seo ... Mholainn an leabhar gu mòr dhuibh ma tha ùidh agaibh anns a' chuspair ... Carson is e "Avoch" a tha sgrìobhte air na soighnichean anns an Eilean Dubh, ged is e "Och" a chanas daoine ann am Beurla? Aa, uill, deagh adhbhar eile airson an leabhar ùr aig MacBhàtair a cheannach ...'
(... you will know the fruits of his scholarship in the two books -- Place Names of Ross and Cromarty (1904) and The History of the Celtic Place-names of Scotland (1926). If you think highly of those, as I do, you will greatly welcome a newly-appeared book ... There are things of real value in this book ... I would strongly recommend the book to you, if you are interested in the subject ... Why is it "Avoch" that's written on the signs in the Black Isle, but "Och" that folk say in English? Ah, well, another good reason to buy Watson's new book ...)

SEP 02The Scots MagazineLetters from Hamnavoe
The Scots Magazine reviewed the new edition of George Mackay Brown's Letters from Hamnavoe
'This welcome paperback edition will bring his writing to a new generation of readers ... readers of Letters from Hamnavoe do not need to be from Orkney to appreciate these elegant, finely-crafted short essays ... There is much good reading here about this and that, and a hundred or more other things ... These Letters are sprinkled with dry humour, and are rich in the apt phrase ... George Mackay Brown thought that perhaps a selection of these writings might make "a pleasant bedside book": they do, and more.'
9 AUG 02TLSLetters from Hamnavoe
The TLS reviewed George Mackay Brown's Letters from Hamnavoe
'Letters from Hamnavoe was first published in 1975, but time has not diminished its pleasure ... There is humour, wit, a playful -- sometimes self-mocking -- irony in many of these letters ... There is also pure poetry ... George Mackay Brown writes without sentimentality or quaintness of this unfamiliar, northern region, and his reminiscences of boyhood and narratives of past Orkney life are never nostalgic.'
